Yersaiyn Nagaspayev, Minister of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan, outlined key initiatives in the metallurgical sector that will drive future growth in the country's processing industry in an interview with Kapital.kz.
The most significant project in the ferrous metallurgy sector is the comprehensive modernization and renovation of Qarmet. The enterprise plans to increase annual steel production to 5 million tons, upgrade key production lines, and expand its product range. The priority direction is to produce more complex, higher value-added, and in-demand products, particularly special steel and automotive steel.
The ferroalloy plant project implemented by Mineral Product International in Ekibastuz also contributes to strengthening the industry. The enterprise will produce up to 160,000 tons of ferroalloys annually and provide jobs for over 800 professionals.
The development of non-ferrous metallurgy is also accelerating. The Yertis hydrometallurgical complex under construction in Pavlodar will become Kazakhstan's first full-cycle facility, processing double-refractory gold ore into finished metal. Solidcore Resources plans to launch the enterprise in 2028, with an annual capacity of 15 tons of gold; the project secured an additional $600 million in credit financing in July.
Furthermore, the minister stated that the construction of copper smelting and primary aluminum production facilities is being studied. The commissioning of all these enterprises will enable Kazakhstan to maximize its internal resource potential, expand export supplies, and increase the share of high value-added metallurgical products.
