Exmar Ammonia Carrier Completes Maiden Voyage, Carrying 30,214 Tons of Ammonia from China to India

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Exmar's latest LPG/ammonia carrier has completed its first commercial voyage after delivery. The vessel, named "Antwerpen," sailed from China to India, using ammonia as fuel. Exmar stated that this ship and its sister vessel, "Arlon," are the world's first ocean-going vessels capable of both transporting ammonia and using it as propulsion power.

The ship departed from Nanjing at the end of last month, carrying a total of 30,214 tons of liquid ammonia cargo to India. The "Antwerpen" is equipped with three cargo tanks designed by Exmar for transporting liquid ammonia or LPG, and features two 500-cubic-meter deck tanks.

The vessel's power is provided by a WinGD X52DF-A two-stroke dual-fuel engine. This engine can operate on diesel and directly receive ammonia fuel from the cargo tanks to enhance flexibility. Carl-Antoine Saverys, CEO of the EXMAR Group, stated: "Ammonia fuel propulsion technology is no longer theoretical—we are putting it into practical application."This maiden voyage has established a complete maritime transport route for liquid ammonia exports from Chinese ports to South Asia, and has also collected initial data on the safety, reliability, and economic viability of ammonia as a marine fuel in actual ship operations. Sebastian Hensel, Vice President of R&D at WinGD, noted that this achievement proves that ammonia-powered propulsion systems can move from concept to commercial reality.
