Traditional blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace routes depend heavily on coking coal, iron ore, sintering and high-temperature thermal systems. As carbon reduction, renewable electricity, scrap recycling and hydrogen-based routes receive more attention, metallurgical equipment must balance capacity, energy efficiency, emissions, circularity and process flexibility.

The electric arc furnace route is one of the important directions in low-carbon steelmaking. Compared with conventional integrated routes, EAF steelmaking can use more scrap and can be better connected with renewable electricity. However, EAF operation requires reliable scrap quality, stable power supply, charge preheating, dust removal, power systems, furnace life and automation control.

For suppliers, an EAF project is not only about furnace manufacturing. It also requires integration with transformers, electrical systems, furnace roofs, oxygen lances, carbon injection, dust collection, scrap preparation, secondary refining and continuous casting systems.

Direct reduced iron routes are also gaining attention. Gas-based DRI, hydrogen-based DRI and smelting reduction technologies offer possible pathways to reduce emissions from ironmaking. These routes require careful design of reducing gas supply, pellet quality, thermal control, reactor systems, gas circulation, dust removal and downstream EAF melting. Low-carbon metallurgy is not a simple equipment replacement. It is a reconstruction of raw materials, energy, reduction, melting and environmental systems.

Environmental equipment is also becoming part of green metallurgical packages. Sintering flue gas desulfurization and denitrification, coking gas treatment, blast furnace gas cleaning, converter primary and secondary dust removal, fugitive emission control, circulating water treatment and solid waste recycling all affect project compliance.

In the future, the competitiveness of green metallurgical equipment will depend on low-carbon process understanding. Suppliers will need knowledge of power systems, hydrogen supply, scrap resources, carbon accounting and environmental standards. Companies that can provide integrated solutions for EAF routes, DRI-EAF systems, waste heat recovery, gas recovery, smart energy management and environmental control will be better positioned in steel decarbonization projects.
