Spain: BMW and Three Other Companies Launch Pilot for 100% Renewable Gasoline

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The BMW Group, Toyota Motor Europe, Bosch, and Repsol have launched a pilot project in Spain aimed at verifying the feasibility of using 100% renewable gasoline in internal combustion engine vehicles to reduce emissions without modifying the vehicles or adding new infrastructure.

Evidence will be obtained that renewable fuels can be deployed at scale today using existing vehicles, current infrastructure, and digital certification technologies.

The initiative began in July and will run for six months, operating a fleet of approximately 20 BMW and Toyota vehicles using Nexa 95 renewable gasoline produced by Repsol. The project will be monitored through the Digital Fuel Twin digital platform developed by Bosch, which is designed to track and certify the use of fuel throughout its lifecycle.

The project aims to provide technical and operational evidence for the feasibility of so-called "Vehicles Using Only Qualified Fuels (VEEF)," which could serve as a complement to electrification in Europe's transport decarbonization strategy. Stefan Heller, Project Lead at BMW Group, stated that technological openness is a key pillar of the company's strategy, and BMW aims to offer increasingly efficient and sustainable vehicles. This project will provide valuable information for developing low-emission mobility solutions.

The trial will focus on three core aspects: verifying the commercial availability of renewable gasoline, validating the digital technology used to certify fuel usage, and demonstrating that existing vehicles can use this fuel with current infrastructure. The Digital Fuel Twin system provided by Bosch integrates information from vehicles, refueling stations, and refueling transactions to verify the consumption of renewable gasoline in real time. Marko Babic, Project Lead at Bosch, noted that the system provides digital transparency across the fuel value chain, from production to end users, thereby creating the trust and traceability needed to scale up the use of renewable fuels.

One of the main objectives of the project is to prove that emission reductions can be achieved using existing vehicles and infrastructure. Unlike technologies that require investment in new charging stations or specific vehicles, the renewable gasoline used in the pilot is fully compatible with current internal combustion engines.

Repsol is the only supplier selling 100% renewable gasoline at public refueling stations. Its fuel is produced using raw materials compliant with the EU Renewable Energy Directive, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. Estíbaliz Pombo, Deputy Director of Energy Products at Repsol, stated that renewable fuels expand the options for decarbonizing transport using existing infrastructure, and the project's results will demonstrate the value based on a technology-neutral strategy.

In addition to evaluating operational performance, the data collected will also support current EU regulatory debates on the future of mobility. Although EU policy prioritizes electrification, the participating companies believe that renewable fuels can help reduce emissions, particularly for the large number of internal combustion engine vehicles that will remain on the road in the coming years. Pascal Ruch, Vice President of Corporate and Government Affairs at Toyota Europe, commented that renewable fuels can play a complementary role to electrification, and the project aims to prove that significant emission reductions are already possible for both new and existing vehicles.
