en.Wedoany.com Reported - Fortinet has announced a collaboration with Intel to develop the Security Processor 6 (SP6), a next-generation processor dedicated to cybersecurity functions. The project will integrate Fortinet's expertise in security chip development with Intel's capabilities in semiconductor design, advanced packaging, and manufacturing.

The SP6 will continue Fortinet's approach of using application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) in its security devices. These processors are specifically designed to perform functions related to traffic processing and the security services offered by the company. Fortinet has used its own proprietary ASICs in its security product line for over two decades, with the previous generation, FortiSP5, released in 2023.

This collaboration will combine Fortinet's experience in security-specific processors with Intel's intellectual property portfolio, semiconductor design capabilities, and advanced packaging technologies. The two companies stated that the project aims to develop a highly integrated processor capable of supporting more complex security services and meeting organizational performance requirements.

The announcement did not disclose technical specifications for the SP6, such as internal architecture, manufacturing process, performance metrics, or a commercial release timeline for the new chip. In addition to developing the SP6, the collaboration aims to enhance the resilience and diversity of Fortinet's global supply chain. The two companies stated that Intel's involvement will help strengthen the semiconductor manufacturing and supply capabilities used for processor development. Intel and Fortinet will also evaluate further collaboration opportunities in semiconductor technology, manufacturing, and cybersecurity innovation infrastructure. Fortinet has not yet disclosed which products will adopt the SP6 or the launch timeline for the new processor.
