The section has been identified as a high-priority repair due to pavement damage caused by continuous heavy vehicle traffic. The Goondiwindi Regional Council will oversee construction on behalf of the department, with the project expected to take 12 to 16 weeks.

The repairs involve a full reconstruction of the existing pavement rather than surface patching. Crews will build a deeper new pavement to enhance its structural strength and resistance to heavy vehicle loads. Councillor Jason Watts, Goondiwindi Regional Council's portfolio holder for transport, roads, and youth, stated that the section will be rebuilt from the foundation up, resulting in a stronger and more stable road better able to withstand heavy traffic.

The Gore Highway is part of the national freight route, supporting interstate and intrastate transport in southern Queensland. Watts noted that the condition of this section has been a concern for some time, and the deeper pavement structure aims to provide a more durable driving surface, reduce the risk of repeated damage, improve ride quality, and decrease vehicle wear on this high-volume freight route.

The project is funded by the Queensland Government, with construction beginning on July 20 and expected to last up to 16 weeks. Road users should be aware of changing traffic conditions and potential delays. The Goondiwindi Regional Council urges drivers and freight operators to remain patient and comply with traffic controls in the construction zone. Watts stated that the council will continue to advocate for more investment in high-priority repairs for regional state and national roads.
