en.Wedoany.com Reported - The surveyor team from the Nansha Survey Office of China Classification Society (CCS) Guangzhou Branch has completed the modification inspection of the "Pioneer," a DP2 dynamic positioning remote-controlled offshore rocket recovery vessel. Converted from a non-self-propelled barge, the vessel is primarily used for offshore recovery of rocket components.

From the outset, the project faced challenges of tight schedules and technical complexity. The modification scope was extensive, covering hull structure reinforcement, installation of a new power system (including main thrusters and tunnel thrusters), replacement and expansion of the power plant, DP-2 system integration, addition of a remote control system, and modification of rocket recovery support facilities. The CCS surveyor team was deeply involved from the design phase, conducting rigorous reviews of the design plans based on CCS standards and the specific requirements of DP vessels and unmanned remote control systems, while providing constructive recommendations.

During the construction phase, surveyors worked on-site, collaborating with technicians from CSSC Wenchong Repair & Refitting and designers from the Institute of Marine Science and Technology, strictly controlling key processes and tests. Throughout the installation and commissioning of the DP-2 dynamic positioning system, surveyors conducted full-time tracking, verifying the performance and interaction of sensors (including DGPS, wind sensors, MRU, etc.), control systems, and actuators to ensure the system met design positioning accuracy and reliability targets. The team also conducted multiple rounds of validation for critical aspects of the remote control system, including functionality, cybersecurity, and fail-safe mechanisms.

To ensure timely delivery, surveyors adjusted their work pace to align with on-site construction. The vessel ultimately completed all modifications and inspections on schedule. It is capable of precise positioning and stable station-keeping in designated sea areas, and can adjust its attitude via remote commands, providing an operational platform for the splashdown and recovery of rocket debris. The completion of this project has enhanced China's support capabilities for offshore space launch and recovery. Through this project, CCS has demonstrated its technical competence in the inspection of high-tech vessels and new marine engineering equipment.
