en.Wedoany.com Reported - Codelco's Ministro Hales division has initiated the participatory design process for the Parque Norponiente in Calama, a 14.7-hectare park that is part of the environmental commitments of its "DMH Future Development" project. The project moves forward after obtaining the Environmental Qualification Resolution (Resolución de Calificación Ambiental) in January 2026, establishing a permanent working group with community organizations in Calama to gather input and proposals to define the final design.
Fernando Promis, Manager of Community Affairs and Sustainability for Codelco's Northern Operations, stated that the project aims to meet specific territorial needs, with the park covering the northern area that forms the boundary between the city and rural and industrial zones. He expressed hope that the park would become a green lung, providing strength and defining limits for the northern area of Calama. The company plans to begin construction in 2028 and will coordinate with the Housing and Urbanization Service (Serviu) to determine the technical and functional aspects of this public space.
Representatives of community organizations expressed support for the participatory process. Víctor Escalona, from the Francisco Segovia Neighborhood Council, emphasized that citizen participation is most important, giving people a voice and vote in matters that benefit everyone. Luisa Espinosa, from the Independencia Norte N°1 Neighborhood Council, added that these participatory spaces are strategic for conveying residents' concerns. Karen Flores, President of the Sol del Desierto Neighborhood Council, highlighted the project's contribution to urban quality, calling it a blessing for the community. Víctor Barra, President of the Villa Huaytiquina Neighborhood Council, praised the transparency of the process.
The participatory process will continue throughout the entire first phase of the project, with regular working meetings with different organizations to incorporate territorial visions and reach a broad consensus on the park's characteristics, functions, and uses. This environmental commitment is part of Codelco's strategy to restore and enhance the value of public spaces in its operational areas, aligning with its sustainability and community integration commitments in the Antofagasta Region.
