en.Wedoany.com Reported - On July 31, 2026, Sungrow, a supplier of inverters and energy storage systems, commissioned the RESPITE Solar-plus-Storage Project in Sierra Leone. The project is equipped with eight PowerTitan series energy storage systems, totaling 35MWh of storage capacity, making it the first grid-connected large-scale national power project in Sierra Leone in nearly a decade.

Sierra Leone is one of the countries with the lowest electricity access rates in the world. The national grid relies solely on a single 161kV transmission line with a capacity of 70MW, connecting the Bumbuna Hydropower Plant to the distribution network of the capital, Freetown. Of the approximately 172,000 electricity customers nationwide, 90% are concentrated in Freetown, with most regions lacking access to reliable power; only 5 of the 16 district capitals receive partial power supply through diesel generators and hydropower facilities, while rural electrification remains limited.

The RESPITE project, supported by the World Bank, faces structural barriers including a weak grid, limited electricity affordability, and insufficient commercial viability, posing significant financing challenges. Sungrow's bankability, along with the reliability of its storage and inverter solutions, helped the project overcome financing hurdles and earn the trust of the World Bank.

The World Bank estimates that once the project is fully operational, Sierra Leone's national electricity access rate will increase from 16% to 36%, providing stable power to households, schools, healthcare facilities, as well as commercial and industrial users.

Sierra Leone's grid is fragile, with power outages lasting up to 18 hours per day, making it one of the most challenging environments for energy infrastructure operations. The project team leveraged the PowerTitan's black start and standalone off-grid capabilities to implement an emergency response strategy, transitioning from grid-connected commissioning to off-grid operation when necessary. The system can automatically switch to black start mode without external grid support, establishing a microgrid that uses solar power to support on-site loads, creating a stable electrical environment for commissioning.

To accelerate project delivery, Sungrow leveraged its global operational experience and adopted a modular pre-installed design, enabling the PowerTitan series to undergo system commissioning before delivery, reducing on-site construction time by 50%. Additionally, the company established a cross-regional, round-the-clock expert support network to overcome time zone barriers, providing professional assessments of technical issues within two hours. Standardized emergency procedures and a localized global spare parts network supported installation, commissioning, and grid connection.

Sierra Leonean officials stated that the selection of Sungrow was based on strong trust in the reliability of its products and mature global delivery capabilities; despite the challenging construction environment, the Sungrow team delivered and commissioned the project with high quality, demonstrating technical expertise and execution capability.

The project's commissioning has been recognized by both the Government of Sierra Leone and the World Bank. In addition to providing clean electricity, the project has created nearly 100 local job opportunities, increased household incomes, and brought broader social and economic benefits to the community.
