en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Lisbon-Setúbal (Puerto de Lisboa-Setúbal) in Portugal handled over 9 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of 2026, with the Port of Lisbon accounting for 5.81 million tonnes, up 3.6% from the first half of 2025, and the Port of Setúbal handling 3.27 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 5.3%.

According to official data released by Portuguese port authorities, growth at the Port of Lisbon was primarily driven by solid bulk cargo, which rose approximately 12% year-on-year, fueled by increased imports of grains, oilseeds, and sugar; liquid bulk cargo grew 4%, supported by higher imports of fuels and ammonia. Container cargo increased 2% year-on-year in TEU terms, partly benefiting from the new regular container service launched by Boluda shipping company starting in the second quarter of 2026, which strengthened the port's maritime connections and brought the number of regular container services at the Port of Lisbon to 24.

Growth at the Port of Setúbal was mainly driven by solid bulk cargo (up 12.9%) and container cargo (up 6.4%), with container shipping volume reaching approximately 84,000 TEU, an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period last year.

The Port Authority of Lisbon-Setúbal (Autoridad Portuaria de Lisboa-Setúbal) stated that the first-half results highlight the responsiveness and operational complementarity of the two ports, reinforcing the region's port system as an integrated logistics platform serving the national economy, international trade, and global supply chains. The authority's chairman, Vítor Caldeirinha, said the results confirm the robustness of the "dual-port, dual-hub" strategy, noting that the complementarity between the two ports brings significant added value to the national port system; the authority will continue to invest in infrastructure modernization, sustainability, and innovation, consolidating its position as a reference logistics platform in Iberia and Europe.
