Canada's Convertus Secures CAD 135 Million to Build Waste-to-Fuel Plant

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Convertus Group (Convertus) has secured CAD 135 million in financing for its flagship biofuel facility in York Region, Ontario, which will convert household food waste into renewable natural gas, fertilizer, and bottled liquid carbon dioxide once operational.

The facility is designed to process approximately 200,000 tonnes of source-separated organic waste annually, and upon full operation, it is expected to produce 350,000 to 400,000 gigajoules of renewable natural gas per year. Convertus states that its output could provide heating for approximately 5,000 households.

No detailed technical specifications have been publicly disclosed, but the general process is as follows: food waste from York Region arrives at the facility, where contaminants such as plastics are first removed, and the organic matter is then blended into a pumpable slurry that is fed into sealed anaerobic (oxygen-free) digestion tanks.

Microorganisms inside the tanks break down the slurry and release gases such as methane, which are purified and concentrated into renewable natural gas (RNG) and fed into the local natural gas grid. The residual digestate from the process will be processed into low-grade liquid fertilizer, while the carbon dioxide is purified, compressed, and cooled into liquid food-grade products, supplied to food and beverage production and greenhouse use.

The funding was provided by Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit (PSIC). Convertus Chief Financial Officer Jamie Jongsma stated that this financing reflects PSIC's confidence in the company's business and the long-term vision of its team, and expressed gratitude to Selkirk Advisory Group for its support during the financing process.

Benjamin Shenwick, Head of PSIC, stated that the York biofuel facility will provide critical long-term organic waste processing capacity for York Region and the Greater Toronto Area, featuring a design with robust operational redundancy that balances circular economy and decarbonization benefits.

The project is progressing as planned, with full operation expected in early 2027. Upon completion, the facility will become the flagship project in Convertus's portfolio of advanced organic infrastructure.
