en.Wedoany.com Reported - Lesotho has signed an agreement for the $6.2 billion Kobong project, hailed as the largest single foreign investment in the country's history, covering hydropower development and artificial intelligence (AI) data center construction.

The project is backed by Convalt Energy, a New York-based renewable energy company. The company stated that it is building an integrated value chain encompassing photovoltaic manufacturing, power generation, and data center development, aiming to transform Lesotho from a net electricity importer into a regional power exporter.
Once fully operational, the project will generate 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of power capacity, with an additional 4.6 GW of installed solar capacity.
The electricity will be used both to expand Lesotho's domestic power capacity and reduce import dependence, and to power adjacent data centers dedicated to AI workloads.
Convalt Energy will fund the initial feasibility study for the project, with construction planned to begin in 2029.
The project also aims to establish Lesotho as a regional hub for AI-driven digital infrastructure. Convalt Energy stated that Lesotho's climate, abundant land and water resources, energy development potential, and stable democratic governance make it an ideal location for data center siting.
A signing celebration for the project was held at the U.S. Embassy in Lesotho, attended by multiple Lesotho government officials, heads of foreign diplomatic missions in the country, and business leaders.
