Wedoany.com Report-Jun 3, Google plans to invest $10 billion in a 486-hectare data centre complex in West Memphis, Arkansas, according to local reports. The site, located across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee, will include five server farms, office spaces, a road network, and a substation to support the facility’s significant power needs.

One of the attractions of West Memphis is thought to be the abundance of subsoil water, seen here at the city’s Tilden Rodgers Sports Complex

The project is being developed by Groot LLC, a special purpose vehicle, as reported by the Memphis Business Journal. Documents filed with the West Memphis city council outline the $10 billion investment, which could qualify for up to $50 billion in personal property tax incentives. This investment surpasses the $3 billion Big River plant by US Steel, currently the largest private investment in Arkansas.

Site plans submitted to the Army Corps of Engineers indicate that the substation will span 10 hectares and cost up to $142 million. Google aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for its data centres by 2030, potentially utilizing water cooling from the local aquifer to support this goal. The company has committed to spending $75 billion in 2025 to enhance its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The project has progressed to the request-for-proposals stage, with construction signage visible on-site. Turner Construction and Yates Construction, currently involved in an Amazon data centre project in Jackson, Mississippi, are named as the contractors overseeing the development.

This initiative reflects Google’s commitment to expanding its data centre capabilities while prioritizing sustainable practices and supporting the growing demand for advanced digital infrastructure in the region.
