Brazil's SABESP and Vivo Deploy 4.4 Million Smart Water Meter IoT

en.Wedoany.com Reported - SABESP has announced a partnership with Telefónica/Vivo and IDEMIA Secure Transactions (IST) to deploy a smart water management Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity project in Brazil. This 14-year strategic alliance covers the cities of São Paulo and São José dos Campos, with plans to securely connect 4.4 million smart water meters.

The project combines Vivo's connectivity network and integration service capabilities with IST's secure and scalable eSIM IoT technology. The connectivity is based on IST's eSIM and eSIM IoT platform, compliant with the GSMA SGP.32 specification (the latest standard for remote SIM provisioning in IoT devices, designed to simplify large-scale deployment and enhance security), and features a forward-looking design in cryptographic agility, preparing for the post-quantum era. The solution supports reliable access in remote areas while balancing energy efficiency and resilience.

Smart water meters can provide hourly water consumption data, helping to identify anomalies and leaks. Higher-frequency and more accurate water balance helps SABESP optimize the operation of its water distribution network, addressing Brazil's persistently high water loss rates. The project can also save significant water resources through early intervention in leak repair. Denis MAIA, SABESP's Executive Director of Customers and Technology, stated that smart metering enhances SABESP's ability to modernize the management of essential sanitation services and reinforces its commitment to responsible water use.

The project also focuses on customer relationships in water supply services. Precise consumption monitoring and transparent data enable consumers to participate in more responsible resource management. Luiz RENATO FRAGA RIOS, SABESP's Revenue Protection Director, noted that accelerating leak repairs after meter installation is expected to save billions of liters of water.

Adriano PEREIRA, Vivo's Director of IoT and B2B Innovation, stated that Vivo provides complete integration capabilities beyond connectivity—from infrastructure to solution design and operational execution—making smarter, more sustainable essential services possible. Diego CECCHINATO, IST's Senior Vice President of Connectivity Services for Latin America, stated that this project demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can advance together, strengthening critical future infrastructure while protecting natural resources.
