Italy's FS Logistix Launches Automotive Rail Corridor, Cutting 4,800 Tonnes of Annual Emissions

en.Wedoany.com Reported - FS Logistix, in partnership with Automar (a Grimaldi Group company) and GTA, has launched a dedicated automotive rail corridor connecting Livorno, Pontecagnano, and Gioia Tauro in Italy, operated by Mercitalia Rail, with an expected annual reduction of 4,800 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions. The total project investment and construction timeline have not been disclosed.

The corridor establishes three long-term round-trip segments between Livorno (Tuscany), Pontecagnano (Campania), and Gioia Tauro (Calabria): Livorno–Pontecagnano, Pontecagnano–Gioia Tauro, and Gioia Tauro–Livorno. The Piazzale II Faldo terminal in Livorno (managed by GTA) and the Automar terminal in Gioia Tauro serve as the two anchor points, with Pontecagnano as the intermediate node. The project links port operations with rail logistics, aiming to reduce vessel turnaround time at the Port of Gioia Tauro; Gioia Tauro is Italy's primary maritime entry point for automobiles imported from the Far East, and rail distribution from there can cover Italy and the broader European market. The partners also highlighted structural advantages such as reducing empty truck runs and alleviating the shortage of professional drivers, but no quantified targets for these two metrics were disclosed.

Mercitalia Rail, part of the freight division of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, operates all three segments. The supporting organization is ALIS.

Market Research Future (2025) projects that Italy's rail freight market will grow from $428.2 billion in 2025 to $680.3 billion by 2035, at a compound annual growth rate of 4.8%, with intermodal demand for shifting automotive and retail freight to rail being one of the driving factors. The partners' estimated annual reduction of 4,800 tonnes accounts for approximately 0.3% of Italy's total transport sector emissions (about 105 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, ISPRA data). Gioia Tauro's role as a Mediterranean transshipment gateway for Far East automotive imports allows the Gioia Tauro–Livorno axis to bypass congestion at northern European ports such as Bremerhaven and Zeebrugge; the corridor extends from Calabria to Tuscany, covering more than 800 kilometres.
