Google Removes Mobile Assistant on September 4, Gemini Takes Over

After that, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on phones, tablets, or paired devices. This change also affects Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto systems projected from phones.

Google stated in the email that Gemini will become the default assistant experience on the Android platform, and Google Assistant will no longer be available on mobile devices. The removal begins on September 4 and will take several weeks to reach all users. Once access is terminated, users will not be able to restore Google Assistant. On devices that meet the minimum system requirements and are located in regions where Gemini services are available, Gemini will automatically replace Google Assistant. When users invoke the assistant via the "Hey Google" voice command or by long-pressing the power button, Gemini will be launched. Gemini will also become the default assistant on devices paired with the phone, including Wear OS watches, compatible Gemini headphones or earbuds, and Android Auto vehicles projected from the user's mobile device.

Starting September 4, users will also lose access to Google Assistant on the aforementioned paired devices. The only exception is cars with built-in Google, which will continue to support Google Assistant after September 4, 2026. Google noted that this change is limited to mobile devices and accessories paired with phones, including watches, headphones, and car infotainment systems. Plans to bring Gemini to Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, and smart displays are separate from this adjustment and are not included in the September 4 mobile device removal scope.

For users who still rely on Google Assistant on mobile, Google recommends completing several preparatory steps before September 4. First, confirm that the Android device meets Gemini's minimum system requirements and is in a region where Gemini is available, as this directly determines whether Gemini can become the user's default assistant. Second, review routines, shortcuts, or workflows built around Google Assistant, as there will be no way to revert to the original settings once access is terminated. Finally, check whether paired Wear OS watches and earbuds are compatible with Gemini, as these devices will switch to Gemini in sync with the phone. Cars with built-in Google are not affected by this change, and owners need not take any action.
