en.Wedoany.com Reported - American Airlines and Infinium announced on August 6, 2026, the first delivery of electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) to a commercial airport and its use on a commercial passenger flight. The American Airlines flight departed from Corpus Christi International Airport (CRP) in Texas and landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), validating the practical application of a new generation of drop-in sustainable aviation fuel.

The eSAF used for this flight was produced and blended at Infinium's Pathfinder facility in Corpus Christi. This facility is the world's first commercial-scale power-to-liquid eFuels production site, operational since 2023. The eSAF was blended with conventional jet fuel, passed ASTM International's Jet A specification testing, and required no modifications for use in existing aircraft engines and refueling infrastructure. The fuel was then delivered to the common jet fuel storage tanks at CRP and allocated to the American Airlines flight to DFW, marking the first delivery of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) without bio-based feedstocks to a commercial airport in the United States.

Infinium produces eSAF using waste carbon dioxide and renewable electricity as feedstocks. Compared to petroleum-based jet fuel, Infinium's eSAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90%.

Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle stated that since 2023, the Pathfinder facility has continuously produced eDiesel and eNaphtha using waste carbon and renewable energy for use in commercial trucking and plastics processing. Adding eSAF to the product portfolio and seeing it power commercial passenger flights marks a meaningful step forward in delivering practical low-carbon fuel solutions.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said this flight represents a significant moment for the aviation industry, and the partnership with Infinium demonstrates how next-generation technologies like eSAF can move from early investment to real-world application. Scaling sustainable aviation fuel production at lower costs is critical to reducing emissions, enhancing long-term competitiveness, and sustaining the connectivity and economic benefits that customers rely on.

American Airlines is advancing the scaled adoption of SAF, holding a commercial-scale eSAF offtake agreement with Infinium's Project Roadrunner, partially supported by a separate agreement with Citi to reduce Scope 3 emissions from employee business travel. Project Roadrunner, financed by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and Brookfield Asset Management, with non-recourse project debt provided by HSBC, is currently under construction, with eSAF production and delivery expected to begin in 2027 and an annual capacity exceeding 5 million gallons at full capacity.

The global aviation industry consumes nearly 100 billion gallons of jet fuel annually, with over 4 billion passenger trips per year. Sustainable aviation fuel currently accounts for less than 1% of total global jet fuel usage. Scalable, drop-in fuels like eSAF are considered one of the most direct solutions for reducing aviation emissions while enhancing energy security through a diversified fuel supply.

Edward Skyler, Head of Enterprise Services and Public Affairs at Citi, stated that this first-of-its-kind eSAF flight is an important step for low-carbon aviation, and Citi supports this effort alongside long-term partners. Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (Texas, 34th District) noted that South Texas has long been a leader in the energy sector, and the work of Infinium and American Airlines in Corpus Christi strengthens the local economy while advancing national energy security.
