en.Wedoany.com Reported - Portugal's H2NG project will validate the technical feasibility of injecting hydrogen into natural gas transmission pipeline networks under high-pressure conditions, providing measured evidence for the gradual compatibility of existing natural gas infrastructure with renewable gases.

Led by PRF Gas Solutions, with an implementation team comprising STREAM, the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), and ADAI, the project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of controlled hydrogen integration into natural gas infrastructure in a real-world environment. Unlike laboratory or purely conceptual validation, the project focuses on actual operating conditions, addressing the engineering challenges that arise when hydrogen enters existing pipeline networks.

The project employs a controlled blending solution that integrates a hydrogen production system, conditioning system, operational control system, and an injection point, acting directly on existing infrastructure without requiring intrusive devices in the pipeline network. This solution enables continuous monitoring of hydrogen flow rates and key operational parameters, as well as assessment of the compatibility of hydrogen/natural gas mixtures under real operating conditions.

The test data accumulated during the project will be used to analyze the operational performance of natural gas transmission networks at different hydrogen concentrations, providing technical and scientific support for the future integration of hydrogen into Europe's energy networks.

H2NG is co-funded by Centro 2030, Portugal 2030, and the European Union.
