Wedoany.com Report-Jun 6, On June 2, 2025, CMA CGM, a leading French shipping company, advanced its investment plans in Algeria through a meeting between its CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The discussion, originally planned for April but delayed due to a diplomatic issue between Algeria and France, focused on two port development projects aimed at enhancing Algeria’s maritime infrastructure.

CMA CGM is expanding its presence in the Mediterranean, with recent initiatives including the modernization of Syria’s Latakia port and a long-term agreement to redevelop Beirut’s port. In Algeria, the company sees significant potential. “We can be an ally of Algeria in developing infrastructure and making Algerian ports true regional hubs. I strongly believe in the potential of this country,” Saadé stated to local media.

Algeria is working to diversify its economy, reducing dependence on oil and gas by improving its port sector to handle growing container shipping traffic. CMA CGM’s projects target the ports of Oran and Djen Djen to alleviate congestion at the Port of Algiers, where vessel waiting times currently exceed seven days.

In Oran, CMA CGM’s subsidiary, CMA Terminals, plans to lease and upgrade the container terminal to handle over one million TEUs annually. A technical team is finalizing the investment plan, expected to be announced by the end of 2025. Additionally, to strengthen regional connectivity, CMA CGM is exploring a feeder shipping line between Marseille and Oran, operated by its subsidiary La Méridionale, acquired in 2023. This service aims to reduce transit times to under 48 hours.

These efforts align with CMA CGM’s broader strategy to enhance logistics and terminal operations across the Mediterranean, positioning Algerian ports as key hubs for regional trade.
