Homeowners can rent two Powerwall units for $35 per month with $0 installation fees, and gain access to a fixed electricity rate offered by Tesla Electric in Texas's retail electricity choice areas. This plan marks Tesla's first bundling of residential energy storage equipment with a retail electricity plan.

Under the plan, Tesla Electric will actively dispatch the Powerwall through a virtual power plant (VPP) contract, charging during off-peak hours and selling electricity back to the grid during peak hours. Meanwhile, Tesla Electric guarantees that the Powerwall will always retain at least 20% of its reserved capacity, leaving a buffer for homeowners' backup power needs. The plan also includes a built-in Storm Watch feature, which automatically charges the battery to full capacity before severe weather arrives, ensuring homeowners have backup power protection before outages occur.

Tesla is not the first U.S. company to offer a battery rental plan that does not require a solar system. Palmetto launched its Energy Backup Plan earlier this year, which also targets backup energy storage needs while eliminating traditional financial and maintenance burdens.
