en.Wedoany.com Reported - Wedoany, August 18 – ABB has been selected by Norwegian renewable energy developer Statkraft AS to modernize the Vikfalli hydropower plant group, located in the municipality of Vik, 170 kilometers northeast of Bergen on Norway's west coast. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2026, with financial details not disclosed.

The Vikfalli project comprises three plants – Målset (24 MW), Refsdal (92 MW), and Hove (68 MW) – with a total of five generating units and an annual output of 830 GWh, enough to meet the electricity needs of approximately 53,000 Norwegian households.

ABB's scope of work includes the installation of the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system and monitoring platform, which will be integrated with existing third-party turbine systems to provide a unified operating environment across the three plants. The contract also covers the deployment of UNITROL® 8000 excitation systems for all five generating units, advanced cybersecurity solutions, high- and low-voltage electrical systems, vibration monitoring and protection, digital solutions, as well as cable supply and installation. The integration of modern excitation and protection systems will help generators meet evolving grid code requirements.

Inge Hass, Plant Manager for Statkraft's Sogn region, said: "The Vikfalli upgrade is an important step in strengthening Norway's renewable energy infrastructure. We have worked closely with ABB from an early stage to ensure the solution is optimized."

Regarding on-site work, the Målset plant is scheduled to commence in 2028, followed by the Refsdal and Hove plants in 2029. Hydropower accounted for nearly 90% of Norway's total electricity generation in June 2026.
