US MTA Park Avenue Viaduct Completed 60 Months Early, Saving $195 Million

The 133-year-old viaduct extends 1.8 miles between East 110th Street and the Harlem River Lift Bridge, carrying four tracks of the MTA Metro-North Railroad. Since October 2023, construction crews completed the replacement of 196 bridge structures and more than 12,600 feet of track over 28 weekends, with no train delays during the work.

This 1.8-mile elevated corridor is the primary route for Metro-North trains entering and departing Grand Central Terminal, with 98% of trains traveling through this section. The structural replacement was carried out in two phases: the first phase was completed 21 months early, and the second phase 60 months early. Remaining work includes track replacement, cable installation, and removal of temporary fencing and beams, with completion scheduled for September 2027.

During construction, crews used a custom gantry system and enclosed work zones to install prefabricated bridge units while trains continued operating on adjacent tracks. The project contract is titled "Park Avenue Viaduct Replacement and Rehabilitation," and the identity of the primary construction contractor was not disclosed in the project announcement.

According to 2025 data from market research firm Future Market Insights, urban rail transit is the current dominant market segment, accounting for a 46% share in 2025.
