German Uniper and Norway's Equinor Sign 15-Year Gas Supply Agreement

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 24, German energy company Uniper and Norway's Equinor signed a 15-year natural gas supply agreement. Equinor will supply Uniper with more than 30 terawatt-hours of natural gas annually starting from 2027, equivalent to approximately 2.8 billion cubic meters, with the supply period running from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2041.

The contracted natural gas will be delivered in the Trading Hub Europe (THE) German gas market area, with pricing determined according to market conditions. Based on the announced annual supply volume, the cumulative supply over the 15-year period will exceed 450 terawatt-hours, equivalent to approximately 42 billion cubic meters. According to Reuters calculations, the annual supply under this contract is close to 3% of Germany's annual natural gas imports.

Data from the German Federal Network Agency shows that Germany imported 1,031 terawatt-hours of natural gas in 2025, up from 864 terawatt-hours in 2024. Norway became Germany's largest natural gas supplier with a 44% share, followed by the Netherlands and Belgium at 24% and 21%, respectively; during the same period, Germany imported 106 terawatt-hours through its domestic LNG receiving terminals, accounting for 10.3% of total imports.

This contract adopts a long-term pipeline gas supply arrangement, with an annual volume equivalent to approximately 3.5% of Germany's 2025 natural gas consumption of 864 terawatt-hours. Uniper is one of Germany's major natural gas wholesalers, supplying energy and related services to approximately 1,000 municipal utilities and industrial enterprises, and the long-term contract will be incorporated into its natural gas procurement portfolio for the German market.

Equinor stated that this is the company's first natural gas contract with a supply period extending into the 2040s. Germany is also Equinor's largest natural gas sales market, with Norwegian gas exports to Germany dating back to 1977; the first delivery year of this contract coincides with the 50th anniversary of bilateral gas trade between the two countries.

The two companies also signed a non-binding letter of intent to explore trading in sustainability attributes related to this natural gas supply, including gas origin, greenhouse gas intensity in the production phase, and other sustainability data. The relevant data will be subject to third-party verification and made available through a digital platform, but this arrangement is a separate phase from the already-signed 15-year natural gas supply contract.
