SpaceX's First Starmind AI Satellites Planned for Launch as Early as Late 2027, Featuring NVIDIA Vera Rubin Systems
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 24, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's first batch of Starmind AI1 satellites, equipped with NVIDIA chips, is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2027, with "significant scale" expansion targeted for 2028. This timeline is at least one year ahead of the 2028 plan disclosed in the previous prospectus. On the same day, NVIDIA officially announced that SpaceX AI will deploy its next-generation Vera CPU to accelerate agentic AI workloads.
The first-generation Starmind AI1 satellites are based on an optimized version of the NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 rack-scale system, featuring Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. Each satellite is equipped with 75-meter solar panels and a 30-meter deployable radiator, delivering an average of 175 kilowatts and a peak of 250 kilowatts of computing power. Musk stated that this space-optimized system is "simpler, lower-cost, higher-density, and lighter than traditional racks". The satellites will operate in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 600 to 800 kilometers, connecting to ground stations via Starlink optical links.
Starmind is SpaceX's planned orbital AI data center constellation project. In January 2026, SpaceX submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch up to 1 million computing satellites. SpaceX aims to begin large-scale launches via Starship starting in 2027. The NVIDIA Vera is the first CPU designed specifically for AI agents, featuring 88 NVIDIA-designed Olympus cores and high-bandwidth LPDDR5X memory with bandwidth of up to 1.2 terabytes per second, delivering task completion speeds up to 1.8 times faster than x86 CPUs in workloads such as agentic AI, reinforcement learning, and data processing.
Regarding terrestrial computing expansion, Musk stated that the company plans to accumulate over 2 gigawatts of AI computing power by the end of 2026, and advance to a level "closer to 10 gigawatts than 5 gigawatts" by the end of 2027. SpaceX expects to secure a "very large proportion" of NVIDIA GPUs in 2027. However, the cost of orbital data centers remains subject to scrutiny. Wood Mackenzie estimates that building a 1-gigawatt orbital data center would cost approximately $170 billion, more than three times that of a traditional terrestrial data center. Additionally, FCC approval for all 1 million satellites remains uncertain, with multiple operators such as Amazon having filed objections.
