GE Vernova Launches Medium-Voltage UPS in France

(NYSE: GEV) launched its medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply (MV-UPS) in Paris, France, on August 24, 2026, designed to ensure data centers, AI factories, and other energy-intensive facilities receive stable, continuous, high-quality power around the clock.
Against the backdrop of an overall acceleration in electricity demand, AI data centers are regarded as one of the fastest-growing drivers. The core challenge for these facilities lies in power continuity—even brief power disturbances can interrupt critical workloads. Additionally, as loads fluctuate, the facilities' power demand can swing significantly, placing extra strain on upstream grids or generation equipment and making large loads more difficult to connect.
Traditional UPS protection is typically implemented on the low-voltage side after step-down transformation, meaning only a small portion of the facility is individually protected, while sudden changes in power demand can still be fed back to the grid or the generation source supplying it.
GE Vernova moves MV-UPS protection to the medium-voltage side, placing a "stability module" between the facility and the power source. With this coordinated system, a much larger portion of the facility can be protected, while the direct impact of sudden power demand changes on the grid or generation source is also reduced.
Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Vernova's Electrification business, stated that reliable, uninterrupted power is the foundation for energy-intensive industries, and AI data centers are pushing this requirement to new levels of scale and complexity, necessitating a rethinking of how power protection and management are handled within facilities. The MV-UPS is an end-to-end medium-voltage power stabilization solution designed for these industries, applying proven GE Vernova power conversion and energy storage technologies in an innovative way to deliver reliability, cost, and footprint efficiency at the new load scales customers require.
The system is installed in the facility's medium-voltage network, positioned between the power source and critical loads, integrating power conversion technology, advanced controls, and integrated energy storage to maintain voltage and frequency stability required for critical operations, and to buffer sudden facility demand changes before they propagate back to the grid or on-site generation equipment.
Because the protection point is on the medium-voltage side, a single coordinated system can support larger blocks of critical load than traditional low-voltage UPS configurations. In addition, the solution helps meet power quality and grid interconnection requirements, increases flexibility in energy storage usage, and simplifies downstream electrical infrastructure, thereby accelerating the construction process.
As planned, GE Vernova will begin shipping MV-UPS systems in mid-2027, with the first project's energization completed by the end of 2027.
In terms of "power-to-rack" capabilities, GE Vernova covers the electrical infrastructure needed to generate, connect, manage, and deliver power, extending from power generation and grid interconnection to systems supporting computing loads within facilities. The company's current data center portfolio includes: gas turbines for power generation; substations, high- and medium-voltage transformers, switchgear, and gas-insulated switchgear for grid connection; energy management systems for coordinating power supply with facility demand changes; and power conversion technology for managing and delivering electricity within data centers. The launch of the MV-UPS adds the medium-voltage power protection and stability piece to this portfolio. GE Vernova is also developing solid-state transformer technology to enable compact, efficient power conversion closer to the rack. Together, these technologies strengthen the company's power-to-rack approach to meeting the scale, reliability, and electrical efficiency demands of AI data centers.
