Germany's new wind power installations reach 3,948 MW from January to July 2026, up 53% year-on-year

en.Wedoany.com Reported - According to data from the market data register (Marktstammdatenregister) of the German Federal Network Agency, Germany's newly installed wind power capacity increased by 53% year-on-year from January to July 2026, with offshore wind power shifting from zero grid connection in the same period last year to approximately 1,194 MW of new capacity.

From January to July 2026, a total of 587 wind turbines were commissioned in Germany, with a total installed capacity of 3,948 MW; in the same period of 2025, there were 484 turbines with 2,584 MW, representing a 53% year-on-year increase in installed capacity.

Offshore wind power is the main driver of this change. In the same period of 2025, no offshore wind turbines were commissioned in Germany, whereas this year 92 offshore units have been connected to the grid, with a capacity of approximately 1,194 MW. Most of this capacity comes from the Borkum Riffgrund 3 and EnBW's He Dreiht projects, with an additional 2 units from Nordseecluster 1.

Solar installations remained largely flat. Approximately 484,530 new solar systems were registered, totaling 9,572 MW, compared to 581,765 systems and 9,464 MW in the same period last year. The number of systems decreased by nearly 17%, while capacity increased by about 1%.

In terms of power generation, from January 1 to August 20, 2026, wind power fed into the German grid reached 82.31 billion kWh, compared to 73.09 billion kWh in the same period last year. During the same period, wind power generation across Europe totaled 285.36 billion kWh, higher than the 264.52 billion kWh in 2025.

The offshore wind capacity currently connected to the grid mostly comes from projects contracted years ago. Germany's wind power project pipeline was previously considered slow to progress after zero-bid auctions, and the current commissioning data reflects a reality that still predates the timeline of recent auction design discussions.
