Norway's Aker BP Brings Three Satellite Fields Onstream One Year Ahead of Schedule

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 26, Norway's Aker BP confirmed that production has started at its Skarv satellite projects in the northern Norwegian Sea, with the Alve Nord, Idun Nord, and Ørn fields all having transitioned to the production phase—approximately one year ahead of the third quarter 2027 schedule set in the development plan. The three fields hold combined recoverable resources of around 120 million barrels of oil equivalent, primarily natural gas.

Alve Nord, Idun Nord, and Ørn each employ a subsea development concept, with each facility configured with one subsea wellhead template and two production wells, tied back to the existing Skarv floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel via subsea pipelines. The Skarv field came onstream in 2013 and has in recent years integrated surrounding resources such as Ærfugl and Gråsel; this new round of incremental production continues to utilize its processing, storage, and export capabilities.

Natural gas produced from the satellite fields is transported via the Åsgard Transport System to the Kårstø terminal in Norway, while crude oil and condensate are processed and stored on the Skarv FPSO before being offloaded by shuttle tankers. Aker BP estimates that, by leveraging existing infrastructure, the project's incremental carbon dioxide emission intensity is approximately 4.5 kilograms per barrel of oil equivalent.

The project's development plan was submitted in December 2022 and approved by Norwegian energy authorities in June 2023. In its project update related to the 2026 national budget, Aker BP listed the investment estimate at NOK 23.2 billion, an increase of approximately NOK 4.6 billion compared with the plan at the time of approval. The company attributes about 65% of the increase to project adjustments aimed at improving estimated recovery rates and advancing production start-up, with the remainder driven by construction scheduling, market conditions, and inflation changes.

The project is being executed under Aker BP's alliance model, with OneSubsea, Subsea7, Aker Solutions, and Halliburton involved in engineering delivery, Saipem undertaking part of the drilling phase work, and approximately 60% of project procurement sourced from Norwegian suppliers. Among these, Subsea7 is responsible for subsea pipelines and related engineering, with associated offshore installation work originally scheduled for 2023 to 2025.

Aker BP is the operator of the three fields, with license partners including Equinor, ORLEN Upstream Norway, Harbour Energy, and JAPEX Norge. With the three satellite fields now onstream, the portfolio of subsea tie-back projects approved by Aker BP in 2022 has fully entered the production phase.
