Google in the US Plans to Introduce Mechanize Technology and Team for $1.5 Billion
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Google is in advanced talks with US AI startup Mechanize over a deal valued at more than $1.5 billion, aiming to secure a non-exclusive license to Mechanize's technology and bring some of its employees into Google. The current deal structure does not involve Google acquiring Mechanize outright, and neither party has publicly confirmed a final agreement, with specific terms still subject to change.
Founded in 2025 by Matthew Barnett, Tamay Besiroglu, and Ege Erdil, Mechanize primarily develops virtual work environments, evaluation systems, and training data for training and assessing cutting-edge AI coding agents. Its systems enable AI agents to perform software engineering tasks such as feature development, application deployment, and debugging unfamiliar codebases, while generating signals for reinforcement learning and model evaluation through scoring mechanisms.
Some Mechanize personnel expected to join Google will participate in AI model development and evaluation efforts. Mechanize's current business focus is concentrated on software engineering, and the company has developed dedicated evaluation environments for long-horizon coding tasks. Among these, GBA Eval requires AI coding agents to build a Game Boy Advance emulator from scratch within a specified timeframe, using an automated testing system to assess models' ability to complete complex software engineering tasks.
On April 24, 2026, Mechanize completed a $9.1 million funding round at a post-money valuation of $500 million, with investors including Marco Mascorro, Adam D'Angelo, and Devendra Chaplot. The company has also received support from investors such as Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Patrick Collison, and Dwarkesh Patel. The deal under discussion exceeds $1.5 billion, roughly four months after its April funding round.
