FedEx Plans $150 Million Air Cargo Hub in Delhi, India
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 25, FedEx announced its investment plan for an air cargo hub in Delhi, building a fully automated integrated air cargo facility at GMR Cargo City, Indira Gandhi International Airport, with a long-term investment of approximately $150 million. The project covers an area of about 230,000 square feet, and a groundbreaking ceremony has been held, attended by India's Minister of Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu.
The new hub will consolidate FedEx's international air gateway operations in Delhi with its pickup and delivery services into a single facility, with the designed package handling capacity set to increase from the current 600 packages per hour to 5,000 packages per hour, while also reserving room for further expansion. The facility is planned to be equipped with an automated sorting system, next-generation X-ray inspection equipment, security systems, and intelligent package handling technology.
The facility is located within Delhi Cargo City, planned and developed by GMR. GMR Cargo and Logistics signed a concession agreement with Delhi International Airport Limited on September 26, 2025, responsible for the development, maintenance, and operation of Cargo City. In November 2025, GMR Cargo and Logistics secured a term loan of up to INR 7.5 billion from Axis Bank to cover part of the project's estimated construction costs.
FedEx will lease the cargo warehouse within Cargo City and will be responsible for installing the related systems, equipment, and technology. Phase one of Cargo City is planned to develop approximately 1 million square feet, with subsequent phases adding approximately 500,000 to 1 million square feet of additional space, targeting airlines, freight forwarders, and other air logistics service providers as tenants.
FedEx has previously expanded its air cargo handling facilities in southern India. In December 2025, the company inaugurated an approximately 60,000-square-foot integrated air cargo hub at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, consolidating import and export handling operations into a single facility, equipped with mechanized conveyor and automated handling systems, with a designed handling capacity of nearly 4,000 packages per hour.
