German Enercon Launches Wind + Storage Solution and Announces Two Demonstration Projects

The solution is aimed at new wind farms and existing facilities equipped with the company's turbines, allowing a portion of generated electricity to be stored when renewable energy supply exceeds demand, and released again when demand increases, electricity prices rise, or the power system requires regulation services.

Enercon integrates batteries into its wind farm solution

The solution is being introduced against a backdrop of increasing volatility in electricity markets: surplus renewable energy can drive prices down or even into negative territory during certain periods, while grid congestion sometimes forces wind farms to curtail generation. Both scenarios result in lost revenue for developers and wasted available resources. Enercon aims to use a combination of batteries and digital control to store surplus electricity, reduce curtailment, shift power sales to more favorable periods, and reserve capacity to provide services to the power system.

The first project will be implemented at the Möhnesee-Westrich wind farm. Two E-138 EP3 E3 turbines with a combined capacity of 8.52 MW will be co-located with a 5 MW/10 MWh battery capable of delivering maximum output for approximately two hours. The facility will temporarily store a portion of wind power output before feeding it into the grid, meaning the wind farm will no longer rely solely on real-time electricity prices when the wind is blowing.

The second project, Soest-Meiningsen, will integrate wind, solar, and storage at the same site. The configuration includes a 15 MW/30 MWh battery, one E-138 EP3 turbine in operation since 2026, and one E-160 EP5 turbine planned for commissioning in 2028, with a combined capacity of 9.82 MW for the two turbines. This configuration leverages the complementarity of wind and solar energy, jointly managing generation through storage. The battery will serve commercial and grid applications, including arbitrage between off-peak and peak periods and the provision of regulation services.

A hybrid controller will coordinate all components, determining when to generate, store, or feed electricity into the grid. Enercon will also develop revenue models and act as EPC general contractor, undertaking engineering, equipment supply, integration, installation, and commissioning. This move reflects the manufacturer's business shift from merely selling turbines and maintenance contracts toward offering complete solutions that enhance revenue and adapt wind farms to power systems dominated by variable energy sources.
