Australia's InCapture and Yara Partner to Assess Pilbara Carbon Storage Hub

en.Wedoany.com Reported - InCapture Pty Ltd (InCapture) and Yara Pilbara Fertilisers Pty Ltd (Yara) have reached an agreement in principle to jointly explore the development of large-scale offshore carbon storage infrastructure to support industrial emissions reduction in Western Australia's Pilbara region.

Under a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by both parties, the two companies will evaluate the technical, regulatory, and commercial pathways for a multi-user Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) hub, with the goal of providing industrial emitters in the Pilbara region with access to shared offshore carbon storage.

The context of this collaboration is as follows: Yara operates one of the world's largest ammonia production facilities on the Burrup Peninsula; InCapture is the operator of greenhouse gas assessment permit G-15-AP. The G-15-AP permit area, strategically located offshore from the Pilbara, is currently being assessed as a dedicated carbon storage project capable of serving multiple industrial customers in the region.

The project is committed to permanently storing carbon dioxide in saline aquifer geological formations, operating independently of oil and gas production—neither relying on the reuse of existing oil and gas infrastructure nor linked to its decommissioning—providing a dedicated pathway for large-scale offshore carbon storage development. Both parties believe this collaboration has the potential to support emissions reduction efforts across some of Australia's most important industrial and export sectors, while helping the Pilbara maintain long-term competitiveness in resources and industry.

Currently, technical assessment of G-15-AP is being advanced by InCapture and joint venture participant SK earthon Australia Pty Ltd, with Halliburton and Wood supporting the evaluation work. The joint venture plans to submit a Declaration of Identified Storage Formation (DoSF) in the fourth quarter of 2026, a key regulatory milestone in the Australian federal government's offshore carbon storage development process.

Laurent Trost, Chief Operating Officer of Yara Pilbara, stated that this MOU reflects the company's technology-neutral approach to decarbonising its world-class production operations. He said: "Construction of the renewable hydrogen pilot plant has made significant progress on our site, but we believe that for major manufacturers serving domestic and international markets, large-scale CCS holds the greatest potential for rapidly reducing carbon emissions."
