The decision, revealed on June 20, 2025, follows a strategic review highlighting high operational costs and reduced local demand, making the site unsustainable. The Gladbeck plant, operational since 1954, requires significant upgrades, which are no longer viable due to market conditions.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman of INEOS, stated: “This is the consequence of Europe’s high energy costs and challenging market conditions, which are impacting industrial operations. Gladbeck is not the first and will not be the last unless conditions improve.”
