State Bank of India Leads Proposed $3.5 Billion Debt Financing for Vodafone Idea
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 10, a consortium of lenders led by the State Bank of India (SBI) agreed to provide Vodafone Idea with approximately $3.5 billion in debt financing to support the company's business restructuring and mobile communications network expansion. Participating institutions include Union Bank of India and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID), among others. The financing has a term of nearly 10 years, and the final loan documents, drawdown arrangements, and interest rates have not yet been disclosed.

This financing is directly related to Vodafone Idea's capital expenditure plan of approximately 450 billion rupees over the next three years. The company previously disclosed that the overall financing structure includes a public sector bank consortium led by SBI with 6–7 banks participating, as well as Indian private banks and overseas commercial borrowing channels. The company originally planned to raise approximately 250 billion rupees in funded loans, along with approximately 100 billion rupees in non-funded credit facilities, to support subsequent network capital investment.
As of August 2026, Vodafone Idea had completed the first tranche of approximately 64 billion rupees in financing, including 11.83 billion rupees in proceeds from the warrants portion, as well as debt and non-funded financing from overseas commercial borrowings and Indian private banks. During the same period, the company placed orders for approximately 90 billion rupees in equipment and network capital expenditure, and stated that it will continue to release new network construction orders to Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and other suppliers.
In terms of network construction, Vodafone Idea is currently advancing 4G coverage expansion, capacity upgrades, and 5G deployment simultaneously. As of the most recent quarter, the company's 4G population coverage had increased to approximately 87%, adding coverage for approximately 39.4 million people compared with the first quarter of fiscal year 2026; the number of broadband sites increased to approximately 580,900, with approximately 204,900 standalone broadband tower sites. 5G services have been expanded to more than 200 cities across 17 key operating areas.
The user structure has also changed with network expansion. The company's total user base is approximately 193.1 million, of which 4G and 5G users reached approximately 130.1 million, accounting for more than 67% of total users; average monthly data usage per 4G/5G user rose to 21.7GB, and average daily data traffic across the network reached 88.4PB. Capital expenditure in the most recent quarter was approximately 19.3 billion rupees, and the subsequent three-year plan of 450 billion rupees will continue to focus on radio access network, transmission, core network, and 5G capacity construction.
Vodafone Idea had previously initiated network upgrades through large-scale equipment procurement. Company management disclosed that existing network investment will continue to accelerate, and procurement scale will expand as new financing becomes available. The company has continued to increase 4G broadband sites over the past two years and has advanced commercial 5G deployment in key cities. The new financing will be used to maintain continuity of capital expenditure and prevent network construction from slowing due to funding constraints.
The financing conditions also include Kumar Mangalam Birla continuing to serve as Chairman of Vodafone Idea during the loan term. The lenders have also set terms related to default risk and repayment protection. Upon completion of the financing, the SBI-led consortium will become one of the core debt funding sources for Vodafone Idea's three-year network expansion plan.
