en.Wedoany.com Reported - GlobalData expects that by 2035, the share of installed renewable energy capacity in Germany's power mix will rise from about 73% in 2025 to nearly 88%, with renewable generation also approaching 80%. Rising electricity demand, renewable expansion and coal phase-out are together reshaping Germany's power system.

The main drivers of this capacity expansion are solar PV, offshore wind and onshore wind. At the same time, thermal power capacity continues to decline, while gas-fired generation may take on a flexible backup role.

The demand side is also increasing pressure on the system. Germany's electricity demand is expected to grow from about 466TWh in 2025 to more than 576TWh by 2035, putting greater investment pressure on transmission infrastructure. Delivering power from North Sea and Baltic Sea offshore wind projects to industrial centers in southern Germany will require new high-voltage connections; if transmission projects are delayed, the risks of curtailment (deliberate reduction of generation) and supply constraints will both rise.

With coal phased out by 2038 and nuclear power remaining shut down, Germany plans to have the new capacity market fully operational by the end of 2027 to strengthen supply security. The accompanying EEG-2027 reform will change how renewable electricity is supported, with fixed feed-in tariffs gradually being eliminated.

Investment will focus on renewables, as well as hydrogen, energy storage, flexible generation and long-distance transmission. Under Germany's established targets, renewable electricity is to account for 80% by 2030, with climate neutrality achieved by 2045.
