China's First Earth Pressure Balance Shield Machine in Hainan, "Nanmu", Successfully Launched
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 12, as the cutterhead of the shield machine slowly rotated, Hainan Province's first earth pressure balance shield machine, "Nanmu", was successfully launched in the Nanmu Branch Tunnel of Section 3 of the Changhua River Water Resources Allocation Project undertaken by China Railway 18th Bureau Group, marking that the project construction has officially entered the shield tunneling construction stage.

The Changhua River Water Resources Allocation Project in Hainan Province is one of the 150 major water conservancy projects prioritized by the state during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, and is also the largest single-investment water conservancy construction project since the establishment of Hainan Province. The project mainly consists of water source works, water conveyance works, and irrigation district works. Through the construction of new water source works, water diversion works, and the renovation and expansion of existing irrigation district works, it aims to enhance the regional water resources allocation capacity. The Section 3 project undertaken by China Railway 18th Bureau Group has a total length of 39.23 kilometers, with main construction contents including the Dalong Main Tunnel and the Nanmu Branch Line.

In response to the complex construction conditions of the Nanmu Branch Tunnel, including shallow burial depth, alternating soft and hard strata, long-distance hard rock tunneling, and easily disturbed strata, the project team, in conjunction with the actual engineering conditions, jointly developed and customized the "Nanmu" shield machine with CRCHI. The equipment weighs 330 tons, has a total length of 120 meters, and a cutterhead diameter of 3.76 meters.

The Nanmu Branch Tunnel has a burial depth of 3.5 meters to 22 meters. The alignment alternately crosses silty clay interbedded with sand layers and completely weathered to slightly weathered granite composite strata. The maximum compressive strength of the hard rock reaches 150 megapascals, approximately 5 times that of conventional C30 concrete. The rock is dense and hard, placing extremely high demands on the wear resistance of the tunneling equipment.
Focusing on the challenges of hard rock construction, the research and development team scientifically formulated a specialized plan:
✅️ Equipped with a heavy-duty composite cutterhead with spaced arrangement: wear-resistant design was strengthened for core components prone to wear such as the cutterhead and screw conveyor, greatly improving equipment durability;
✅️ Equipped with an active articulation system: capable of flexibly adjusting the tunneling posture within a small tunnel diameter space;
✅️ Equipped with a customized manlock system: comprehensively ensuring continuous, safe, and efficient advancement of tunnel tunneling operations;
✅️ Reserved redundancy for high thrust and torque in advance: effectively adapting to complex strata with alternating soft and hard conditions, ensuring stable and controllable cutterhead tunneling.

To ensure the smooth launch of the shield machine, the project team prepared a specialized hoisting and assembly plan in advance, organized multiple technical briefings and safety drills, and strictly advanced the on-site assembly of the "Nanmu" in accordance with the procedure of "shield body main machine first, backup trailer following, pipeline layout in parallel, and whole-machine joint commissioning and acceptance".

After the completion of the whole-machine hardware assembly, the project team repeatedly verified key parameters such as tunneling posture control, earth pressure regulation, and torque and thrust output, completed equipment functional acceptance item by item, and simultaneously advanced pre-launch works such as reaction frame installation, tunnel portal sealing, and negative ring segment assembly, investigating risks and hidden dangers item by item, thereby building a solid technical and safety guarantee for the smooth launch of the "Nanmu".

It is reported that after the Changhua River Water Resources Allocation Project is completed, it will effectively increase the regional water diversion volume, improve the regional water resources allocation capacity, and inject strong momentum into the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and regional economic development.
