Spain Plans €150 Million Subsidy Program for Highway Charging Infrastructure

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge has launched a preliminary public consultation for a new round of subsidies for charging infrastructure on public roads. The new program has a budget of €150 million, funded by the Multiregional Program of the European Regional Development Fund for 2021–2027, with a focus on supporting the construction of public charging facilities along Spanish highways. The public consultation period runs until September 30. The subsequent subsidies will be managed by the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) and allocated through a competitive process.

The new program will build on the previous MOVES Corredores de Recarga project. In June of this year, that project allocated €97 million to support 341 charging infrastructure projects, involving 2,674 new or expanded charging points, with a minimum available power of 300–400 kW per site. The new round of subsidies will continue to expand the highway fast-charging network on this basis and will examine extending support from light-duty vehicles to heavy-duty vehicles.

The consultation will also assess whether to include major highways of the Trans-European Transport Network, urban nodes, and safe parking areas within the scope of support. For heavy-duty electric trucks, the Spanish government is studying the deployment of high-power charging facilities along major freight corridors and at parking nodes to meet the charging needs of long-haul transport vehicles; the specific subsidy rates, per-project funding caps, and equipment technical thresholds have not yet been finalized at this consultation stage.

As of mid-2026, Spain had more than 56,000 public charging points and approximately 950,000 electrified vehicles. In the second quarter of 2026, 1,605 charging connectors were added, of which 337 had a power output exceeding 250 kW, bringing the national total of high-power charging points above 250 kW to 2,806. The Spanish government has made the high-power charging network a key focus of this new subsidy program.

The MOVES framework has previously provided more than €3 billion in cumulative funding to Spain's autonomous communities and end beneficiaries. This new €150 million program is still at the stage of "public consultation prior to the formulation of subsidy rules" and has not yet entered the stage of formal corporate applications and project awards. Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge will formulate formal subsidy rules and application conditions after collecting market feedback.
