OpenAI Reportedly Acquires Glass Imaging for Over $300 Million to Expand into AI Imaging Hardware

Glass Imaging was founded by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, and its core business is using artificial intelligence to improve imaging quality in smartphones, drones, and wearable devices. If the deal is ultimately confirmed, it will further extend OpenAI's business boundaries from models and software to the underlying imaging technology of consumer electronics hardware.

Glass Imaging's technology focuses on using neural networks to correct lens aberrations, sensor defects, noise, and blur, thereby improving imaging performance on size-constrained mobile devices. According to the company's official materials, its GLASS AI solution includes custom neural ISP software, as well as co-design of AI, optics, and hardware, and can be deployed directly on existing and future devices equipped with on-device AI compute power.

Both founders of Glass Imaging previously had backgrounds in Apple's imaging system R&D, and the team was involved in the development of technologies related to iPhone Portrait mode. In recent years, the company has focused on addressing the limitations of miniaturized smartphone cameras in terms of sensor size, lens structure, and optical performance, and has sought to use AI computational photography to compensate for the physical constraints of traditional optical hardware.

Public reports show that Glass Imaging was valued at approximately $100 million in a 2025 funding round, while the valuation in this transaction exceeds $300 million.
