Two 60,000 m³ Tanks at the Philippines' Ilijan LNG Terminal Completed and Placed into Operation

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, CB&I and AG&P Industrial announced that two full-containment LNG storage tanks, each with a capacity of 60,000 m³, at the Ilijan LNG terminal in Batangas, Philippines, have completed construction and commissioning. Both tanks are now in operation, adding a total of 120,000 m³ of onshore LNG storage capacity. The project is part of the LNGPH Ilijan LNG Facility, the Philippines' first large-scale onshore LNG storage facility.

The two tanks adopt CB&I's all-steel full-containment LNG tank design. Unlike conventional full-containment tanks, which use a steel inner tank and a reinforced concrete outer tank, both the inner and outer tanks are made of 9% nickel steel. Tank 1, after being placed into operation earlier, became the world's first all-steel full-containment LNG tank to enter service; Tank 2 has now also entered operation following the completion of performance testing, marking the full completion of construction, commissioning, and placement into operation for both tanks.

CB&I was responsible for the construction of the two tanks, with AG&P Industrial as its client and responsible for the implementation of works related to the Ilijan LNG terminal. CB&I disclosed that the entire construction process for the two tanks accumulated more than 1 million work hours without any lost-time incidents. The milestone announced this time has advanced from the commissioning of a single tank to the full operation of both tanks, and is not merely mechanical completion.

The Ilijan LNG terminal is located in Batangas, Luzon Island, Philippines. According to AG&P LNG, the terminal has been in operation since 2023 and currently has a regasification capacity of 5 million tonnes per year and a total storage capacity of approximately 250,000 m³, adopting a hybrid model combining a floating storage unit with onshore storage facilities. Since 2023, AG&P LNG has been responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the terminal under a 21-year agreement, covering ship-to-ship LNG transfer, vessel management, real-time facility monitoring, and downstream logistics.

The terminal currently supplies natural gas to nearby gas-fired power generation facilities. AG&P LNG disclosed that the Ilijan LNG terminal supports a 1.2 GW power plant and serves another 1.3 GW generation facility. San Miguel Global Power disclosed in January this year that the Ilijan power plant has been receiving imported LNG through the Batangas LNG terminal since May 2023, with imported resources from suppliers including Vitol, Trafigura, and Shell Eastern Trading.

The Ilijan project initially adopted a combined floating storage and onshore regasification scheme. In 2022, AG&P signed a long-term charter agreement with ADNOC Logistics & Services, bringing in the 137,512 m³ "ISH" as a floating storage unit, and specified in the project plan the subsequent addition of two onshore LNG storage tanks. The full placement into operation of the two 60,000 m³ all-steel tanks corresponds to the completion of this onshore storage expansion phase.
