Volvo Sweden to Start Mass Production of Heavy-Duty Electric Trucks in 2026, with Up to 700 km Range
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Volvo Trucks has started mass production of its new heavy-duty electric trucks. The first vehicles rolled off the line at the Tuve plant in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company had unveiled this generation of models in April 2026. The new models include the long-range Volvo FH Aero Electric, which can travel up to 700 km on a single charge; Volvo FH, FM and FMX also gain electric versions with a range of up to 470 km.

Production will take place at two industrial sites: Tuve in Sweden and Ghent in Belgium. The company has brought the new series to IAA Transportation, the international trade fair held in Hanover from September 14 to 20. Volvo Trucks says the new models target a broader range of road transport operations. Nominal range is affected by factors such as climate, wind, gross vehicle weight and driving style.
The long-range Volvo FH Aero Electric has the longest range in the new generation, mainly due to the use of a new e-axle, which frees up space for a larger battery. With this configuration, the truck can travel up to 700 km on a single charge.

Beyond the range figures, two factors for heavy transport operations are megawatt charging capability and high payload. According to Volvo Trucks, this combination allows electric drive to be used on routes that previously relied on diesel vehicles. The 700 km figure is the maximum range published by the manufacturer for this version.
The new family also includes the Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric. All three models feature an all-new electric powertrain designed to improve energy consumption, productivity and driving performance. For these models, the nominal maximum range is 470 km per charge.
The mass production of these four vehicles is part of Volvo Trucks' electric lineup, which the company now says totals eight models. Applications cover a wide range of operations, from urban distribution and refuse collection to regional and long-haul transport, as well as vehicles for the construction industry.

Production of the new vehicles is split between Tuve in Gothenburg and Ghent. The assembly lines began deliveries just months after the generation was unveiled in April 2026. The company sees industrial-scale production as the next step after that launch.
Volvo Trucks says the initial commercial response has been positive, with customers willing to place orders. Volvo Trucks President Roger Alm said the company is turning the technology into industrial reality, and that the start of production of the new electric trucks shows its commitment to leading the shift of freight transport toward greater sustainability.
The public debut of the new vehicles coincides with the IAA Transportation show in Germany, held in Hanover from September 14 to 20, 2026. The show brings together Volvo Trucks' new generation, led by the long-range FH Aero Electric. The company believes these new range levels can cover a larger share of everyday transport operations.

Volvo Trucks has 2,200 service points in more than 130 countries. Its trucks are assembled in 12 countries, and the company delivered about 120,000 vehicles in 2025. Its products cover medium- and heavy-duty transport vehicles, with service and financing solutions provided through the Volvo Group.
The 700 km maximum range published for the FH Aero Electric is not a fixed figure on every route. Volvo cautions that weather conditions, wind resistance, gross truck weight and driving behavior can all change the result. The new production thus gives Volvo's electric trucks a lineup that already includes eight models for different specialized uses.
