Uganda's 25-meter Ncwera Steel-Concrete Composite Bridge Reaches 40% Construction Completion, Contract Value UGX 8 Billion
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 17, the latest construction progress of Ncwera Bridge in Mitooma District, Uganda, reached approximately 40%. The project is located in Kyamwebya Village, invested and built by the Uganda Ministry of Works and Transport, with Armpass Technical Services Limited undertaking construction, under a contract amount of UGX 8 billion. The new bridge has a designed length of 25 meters and adopts a steel-concrete composite bridge structure, connecting the Ruhinda North and Ruhinda South areas.

The project officially commenced permanent bridge construction on November 21, 2025. Prior to the signing of the construction contract, the Uganda Ministry of Works and Transport had already completed the detailed engineering design of Ncwera Bridge; by the end of the 2024/2025 fiscal year, the project was still in the contractor procurement stage and physical construction had not yet begun. After construction started, the works shifted to the construction of the bridge main structure and the connecting roads on both sides.
In addition to the 25-meter permanent bridge main structure, the scope of works also includes approximately 2 kilometers of connecting roads, gabion works for riverbank and roadbed protection, bridge railings, traffic signs, and related ancillary facilities. The original Ncwera Bridge was completed in 1985 and was destroyed by flash floods in 2021, after which the local community used a temporary wooden bridge approximately 2.5 meters wide to maintain passage.
The Ncwera crossing connects areas such as Mitooma and Bitereko, carrying traffic between schools, medical facilities, and markets. Before the permanent bridge is completed, the temporary wooden bridge has been handling cross-river traffic between Ruhinda and Ruhinda North.
On September 16, the Mitooma District Government and project-related personnel inspected the construction site. Project engineer Martin Bakunzi confirmed that the project has cumulatively completed approximately 40% and is currently still advancing according to the established construction schedule. The bridge main structure, connecting roads, protection works, and traffic safety facilities will continue to be implemented in accordance with the contract scope.
