Norway's Kongsberg Acquires Two Metal 3D Printing Systems to Expand Defense Manufacturing Capabilities

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Norway's Kongsberg Group has announced expanded investment in metal additive manufacturing and established a partnership with Germany's EOS and its subsidiary AMCM. As its first equipment investment, Kongsberg has procured two multi-laser metal additive manufacturing systems, which are planned for installation at its main production facility in Norway for technology validation, product qualification, and production of ready-to-use parts for its defense and security business.

This procurement includes two systems—the AMCM M 4K and the AMCM M 290-2 1kW—along with supporting systems. The M 4K is a large-format metal laser powder bed fusion system capable of manufacturing large, complex metal components; the M 290-2 1kW features a dual-laser configuration. The two systems will enable Kongsberg to print full-scale parts for technology demonstrators, product qualification articles, and flight hardware.

Kongsberg plans to further integrate additive manufacturing into its missiles and aerostructures businesses. The company stated that metal 3D printing will be used for digital design and digital manufacturing, enabling faster access to physical hardware in the early stages of product development and shortening development and validation cycles for certain products. The equipment will initially serve its Missiles & Aerostructures business.

In addition to equipment supply, EOS and AMCM will participate in Kongsberg's initial implementation efforts. EOS's Additive Minds team will provide application development, process implementation, and industrialization support to help establish additive manufacturing processes geared toward scaled production.

The AMCM M 4K has a build envelope of approximately 450×450×1000 mm and is equipped with four 1kW lasers, enabling the manufacture of larger metal components. AMCM has been continuously expanding its production capacity for large metal printing equipment. In August 2026, it opened a new large-equipment assembly facility in Weilheim, Germany, capable of assembling M 4K, M 8K, and other systems in parallel.
