Rail Construction at Spain's Port of Valencia to Last Until November; Maersk Opens Cilla Station for Transshipment

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 18, Maersk issued a customer notice stating that the Port of Valencia in Spain plans to carry out civil engineering works in the port area starting September 25, which will affect rail services, with the related operations expected to last until November 7. Maersk has activated the Cilla intermodal rail station outside the port as a transshipment node for some rail services to maintain rail transport connections for import and export containers at the Port of Valencia.

The Cilla intermodal rail station is approximately 20 kilometers from the Port of Valencia. Under the transport plan devised by Maersk, containers arriving at the Port of Valencia that need to continue by rail will first be transferred by container truck to Cilla station, then loaded onto rail trains bound for inland destinations; reverse transport is likewise completed through Cilla station, where containers are unloaded from rail and then trucked to the port area. This off-port drayage solution adds EUR 140 in transport costs per container, and customers may also choose to complete inland transport directly by road truck.

Rail freight volume at the Port of Valencia has continued to grow this year. Data published by the Port Authority of Valencia show that from January to August 2026, rail freight transport volume in and out of the port area reached 2.64 million tons, up 20.83% year on year. As of the end of July, rail container transport volume in the port area reached 172,328 TEU, up 17.97% year on year, and the freight scale of rail within the port's collection and distribution system continues to expand.

The Port of Valencia is also currently advancing the renovation of rail infrastructure in the port area, including improvements to the rail line between Costa Wharf and Poniente Wharf, as well as the expansion of the rail terminal at Príncipe Felipe Wharf. The related facilities are being adjusted in accordance with rail interoperability requirements, among which the track yard at Príncipe Felipe Wharf and the new logistics track group at Costa Wharf are each configured with 5 tracks, and the operating tracks can accommodate 750-meter trains.
