South Korea's KCompositeLab Introduces Cevotec Robotic Layup Equipment
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 21, South Korean composites technology company KCompositeLab (KCLab) established a commercial partnership with Germany's Cevotec. KCompositeLab will serve as Cevotec's partner in the South Korean market, introducing its SAMBA robotic layup equipment and providing local technical support to South Korean composites manufacturers. The partnership focuses on two major application areas: aerospace and defense, and hydrogen storage pressure vessels. The two parties also plan to carry out pilot and demonstration projects and technical seminars with South Korean manufacturers and research institutions.

Cevotec's SAMBA equipment is based on the FPP (Fibre Patch Placement) process, which uses robots to automatically place materials such as carbon fiber, glass fiber, prepreg, or adhesive film as individual patches onto complex three-dimensional mold surfaces, with the placement orientation of each patch adjustable individually. This process targets complex, medium-sized composite parts and primarily addresses the adaptation challenges of traditional automated tape laying or manual layup in complex curved surfaces and localized reinforcement areas. For composite pressure vessels, SAMBA can also be used for the automated manufacturing of reinforcement structures in the dome region.
This collaboration is not merely equipment sales. KCompositeLab will provide local application engineering support in South Korea, with services covering feasibility studies, process development, and production ramp-up. KCompositeLab itself has composites laboratory capabilities, enabling it to complete material, structural, and process validation for South Korean customers before formally introducing robotic layup equipment, and then transition to subsequent automated production line deployment.
The two parties are initially targeting South Korea's aerospace and defense manufacturing sectors. Cevotec cites South Korea's national aerospace programs, growth in defense equipment exports, and localized manufacturing demand as important market foundations for equipment introduction. For this category of products, SAMBA primarily targets complex aerospace structural components and composite parts, improving repeatability through automated layup and providing process standardization conditions for subsequent mass production.
Another key market is hydrogen storage pressure vessels. South Korea's hydrogen transportation and hydrogen storage equipment industry has continuously expanding demand for composite high-pressure vessels, and the dome region of pressure vessels is a location with high requirements for fiber structure and localized reinforcement. The robotic layup technology introduced to South Korea by Cevotec can be used for automated reinforcement manufacturing in this region, serving the subsequent large-scale production of composite hydrogen storage cylinders.
Under the collaboration arrangement, Cevotec and KCompositeLab will subsequently carry out pilot and demonstration projects jointly with South Korean manufacturers and research institutions, and organize technical training and process seminars. Currently available public information has not yet disclosed the specific amount of the first batch of equipment orders, the customer list, the number of units, or the commissioning time of South Korea's first local SAMBA production line.
