South Africa's Thakadu Launches High-Purity Nickel Sulfate Product IXS-PurePlus
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 22, South African battery materials manufacturer Thakadu Battery Materials announced the launch of a new high-purity nickel sulfate product, IXS-PurePlus, primarily targeting lithium-ion battery manufacturers. The product focuses on enhancing chemical purity and impurity control levels, and is intended for electric vehicle power batteries, energy storage systems, and other industrial applications with high requirements for material consistency. This product launch builds on the completion of an upgrade to Thakadu's existing battery-grade nickel sulfate refining system.
Prior to the commissioning of IXS-PurePlus, Thakadu had added and completed the commissioning of a solvent extraction circuit at its existing battery-grade nickel refinery. The refining facility is located within Sibanye-Stillwater's South African base metals refinery, primarily receiving crude nickel sulfate feedstock generated by the latter and further purifying and processing it into higher value-added battery-grade nickel sulfate products for supply to export markets. The newly added solvent extraction capacity directly enhances the product's impurity control and high-purity processing capabilities.
Nickel sulfate is one of the important precursor materials for high-nickel cathode materials, and its impurity levels directly affect subsequent cathode material synthesis and battery performance. Thakadu positions IXS-PurePlus for customers with requirements for stricter chemical purity, impurity control, and consistency, with applications including new energy vehicle batteries, stationary energy storage systems, and advanced industrial technology sectors. The company did not disclose specific purity specifications, designed production capacity, additional investment amounts, or information on initial customers for the product.
The cooperation model between Thakadu and Sibanye-Stillwater is based on deep processing of existing nickel resources. Sibanye-Stillwater provides crude nickel sulfate feedstock, while Thakadu is responsible for subsequent purification and battery-grade product processing. As early as the previous cooperation phase, Thakadu had already further converted lower-value crude nickel sulfate into battery-grade materials, while simultaneously recovering some of the cobalt resources contained therein. The launch of IXS-PurePlus this time further adds high-purity processing capacity to the existing production line.
