en.Wedoany.com Reported - U.S. battery materials startup Graphenix Development Inc. (GDI) has announced that it will build a silicon anode materials demonstration plant in Farmsum, Groningen Province, the Netherlands, with Haskoning responsible for project management and engineering support. The project is located at the Chemport Innovation Centre and is scheduled to begin operation in early 2027 for scale-up validation and pre-production of GDI's silicon anode technology.

The demonstration plant will use a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process to deposit silicon material on substrate surfaces for the production of next-generation lithium-ion battery anodes. GDI's technology route is centered on 100% silicon anodes, with products targeting high-energy-density battery applications. Subsequent target markets include electric transportation, medical devices, and defense, among others.

The facility GDI is building in Farmsum undertakes the validation task of transitioning from R&D to industrialization. The project will focus on PECVD equipment installation, process scale-up, continuous production, and product performance validation, providing process and engineering data for subsequent larger-scale production lines. Groningen Province had previously provided GDI with a €50,000 subsidy for green chemistry technology development and scale-up to the pre-production stage.

In March of this year, GDI completed a $15 million financing round, which included investors such as W. L. Gore & Associates, InnoEnergy, Impact NY, Helios Climate Ventures, and SIA/NOM. The company disclosed at the time that the financing would be used to install megawatt-scale roll-to-roll production lines in the United States and Europe, with its European production layout advancing in parallel with its Dutch business expansion.

GDI had previously established a European business foundation in Groningen. In 2025, the company completed more than $11.5 million in follow-on financing and made clear that it would advance 100% silicon anode pilot production in Europe. The Farmsum demonstration plant will further undertake technology scale-up and industrialization validation, with plans to begin operation in early 2027.
