en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 28, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the establishment of a state-owned grid investment institution, Great British Grid (GB Grid), which will be placed under Great British Energy and will focus on investing in the UK's electricity network infrastructure and accelerating grid connections for businesses and new energy projects. The UK government plans to allow GB Grid to use up to £4 billion previously allocated to Great British Energy, though not all of that funding is certain to be used for GB Grid.

GB Grid will participate in building new grid connection facilities and compete for projects with existing private grid companies. The UK government also plans to expand the right of businesses to build their own grid connection facilities, allowing companies to apply to use GB Grid funding to cover part of the connection costs. The arrangements mainly target the long-standing grid connection queues and access lead times for new industrial facilities, commercial projects, and renewable energy projects.

Under the plan currently announced, GB Grid will expand new energy access through additional network investment and connection capacity, while also taking on part of the investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure. The UK government positions this institution as a grid investment platform within the Great British Energy system and plans to use public capital to directly enter the electricity network investment sector previously undertaken mainly by private companies such as National Grid.

Burnham also proposed bringing UK energy costs close to the level of other European countries within the next 10 years. The related plans also include expanding government participation in grid infrastructure and renewable energy grid connections.
