Canpotex to Invest CAD 500 Million in Upgrading Vancouver Port Potash Export Terminal

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 25, Canadian potash exporter Canpotex announced that it will invest CAD 500 million in Neptune Bulk Terminals at the Port of Vancouver to upgrade key facilities related to potash exports. This is Canpotex's largest single supply chain investment to date. A groundbreaking ceremony has been held, with construction planned for completion in 2028. Existing potash export operations will continue without interruption during construction.

The renovation will replace and upgrade core facilities including terminal shiploaders, conveyor systems, and railcar dump pits, covering key links in the potash process from rail arrival at the port and terminal transfer to ship loading for export. Neptune is one of the largest potash export terminals in the world and Canpotex's most important overseas export node. Canpotex disclosed that it exports more than 15 million tonnes of Canadian potash annually to over 40 countries through its own supply chain.

Canpotex has long transported potash westward by rail from mines in Saskatchewan, with most cargo entering the Vancouver and Portland, U.S., port systems. Neptune began handling potash export operations in 1979 and remains one of Canpotex's primary potash marine export terminals. The company previously disclosed that approximately 70% of Canpotex potash exports have been handled through Neptune.

The CAD 500 million project represents a new round of expansion and equipment renewal building on nearly CAD 1.5 billion in cumulative investment Canpotex has made in Neptune over the past 20 years. Canpotex's existing logistics system also includes more than 8,500 dedicated railcars, a railcar maintenance facility in Saskatchewan, and multiple port terminals in North America. The company stated that approximately 85% to 90% of project spending is expected to go to Canadian local suppliers and contractors, with the construction phase expected to support 400 to 500 jobs.

Canpotex is jointly owned by Nutrien and Mosaic and is primarily responsible for the overseas sales and logistics of potash produced by the two companies in Saskatchewan. After the Neptune upgrade is completed, the related facilities will continue to handle railcar unloading, in-port conveying, and ocean-going bulk vessel loading, with the project focused on improving the long-term reliability and equipment operating capacity of the existing export system.
