en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 29, Angola Cables initiated capacity upgrades on the MONET and South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) submarine cables, deploying Ciena's high-capacity optical transmission equipment to enhance transatlantic communication capabilities between the United States, Brazil, and Angola. MONET connects the United States and Brazil with a total length of 10,556 kilometers; SACS connects Brazil and Angola with a total length of 6,165 kilometers. Combined, the two systems form a direct communication path from the United States to Angola with a round-trip latency of approximately 130 milliseconds.

This upgrade will deploy the Waveserver platform, WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optical technology, the 6500 packet-optical transport platform, and the Navigator network control suite. MONET will support 800Gbps client interfaces, with network service capabilities ranging from 100Gbps single connections to full fiber pair capacity, providing transoceanic connectivity at various capacity tiers for cloud service providers, hyperscale data centers, content platforms, wholesale carriers, and enterprise customers.

Angola Cables' existing submarine cable network spans approximately 33,000 kilometers, covering WACS, SACS, and MONET, and extends its reach to over 50,000 kilometers through partner networks including EllaLink, Equiano, and 2Africa. Its backbone network currently connects more than 30 network nodes, over 1,000 data centers, and more than 500 cloud access points, and interconnects with 27 internet exchange points and over 6,000 peering relationships.

MONET had previously deployed Ciena optical transmission technology. During the system's construction phase in 2017, GeoMesh and WaveLogic solutions were adopted, with the U.S.–Brazil segment designed to carry more than 25Tbps; in 2018, spectrum sharing capabilities were added, allowing customers to obtain independently upgradable spectrum resources on shared physical fiber. This round of upgrades continues to leverage existing submarine fiber assets, enhancing per-channel and full fiber pair available capacity through next-generation coherent optical and network control equipment.
