Spain's EDP and Zelestra Sign Over 1 GWh of Energy Storage Capacity
en.Wedoany.com Reported - EDP and Zelestra have signed two new power purchase agreements (PPAs) to pair battery energy storage systems (BESS) with two already-operational solar plants in Spain, converting the existing solar plants into hybrid solar-plus-storage projects. With these agreements in place, the two companies have jointly advanced four hybrid projects in Spain, with contracted energy storage capacity totaling more than 1 GWh.

The two long-term agreements correspond respectively to the Pedroso plant in Seville and the Valkyria plant in Castilla-La Mancha. The Pedroso plant has a solar installed capacity of 31 MWdc, and Zelestra plans to add a 25 MW, approximately 100 MWh BESS; the Valkyria plant has a solar installed capacity of 150 MWdc and will be paired with a 90.45 MW, approximately 362 MWh BESS. Both BESS units are configured for 4-hour duration.
This is not the first hybridization collaboration between the two parties in Spain. In 2025, EDP and Zelestra signed their first PPA combining solar power generation with battery storage, covering a 170 MWdc solar project in Trujillo, Extremadura, equipped with 400 MWh of storage. In early 2026, the two parties signed Spain's first PPA aimed at hybridizing an already-operational plant, adding a 160 MWh BESS to the Pizarroso plant in Cáceres, which has an installed capacity of 50 MW. Across the four projects, cumulative energy storage capacity exceeds 1 GWh.

The two companies believe that hybridizing already-operational plants is one of the quickest ways to enhance the flexibility of Spain's power grid, because the land, grid connection conditions, and generation capacity are already in place.
Pedro Neves Ferreira, CEO of Global Energy Management at EDP, said that EDP's innovation is not limited to deploying renewable energy generation; the company continues to develop new solutions that combine technology, market insight, and assets capable of providing flexibility to enhance the value of clean energy. He also said that integrating energy storage with renewable energy generation can drive system resilience, efficiency, and the progress of economic electrification and decarbonization.
Jaime Burguete, CEO of Zelestra Spain, said that Zelestra and EDP have established a commercial alliance in the Spanish market that is unlocking large-scale energy storage capacity to benefit the entire energy system. He said the four hybrid projects demonstrate that energy storage is viable in Spain, and he expects this segment to become a major growth area in the coming years.
