en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 5, the UK agricultural research institute NIAB announced a three-year international wheat breeding research project, scheduled to launch in October 2026. Funded by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the project will collaborate with 8 commercial wheat breeding companies and international research institutions to establish processes for trait introduction, combination, and validation, with a focus on developing advanced pre-breeding materials suitable for high-yielding European winter wheat varieties. This project is the first large-scale project to receive funding under the second phase of the International Wheat Yield Partnership (IWYP).

The project is led by Dr. Phil Howell, Head of Crop Improvement Research at NIAB. The main work includes introducing superior genetic traits identified during the research phase into the genetic backgrounds of mainstream high-yielding European winter wheat, using combinations of different traits to develop advanced pre-breeding materials, which are then handed over to commercial breeding companies for experimental validation. Trials will be conducted at breeding trial stations in the UK and other parts of Europe to evaluate the performance of materials under different environmental conditions and to screen candidate traits suitable for subsequent commercial breeding.

International research institutions participating in the project include the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico, Kansas State University in the United States, and the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service. NIAB is responsible for breeding translation research in the European region, collaborating with other research centers of the International Wheat Yield Partnership on germplasm materials and breeding technology research. European field testing will cover the UK, France, Germany, and Denmark, with related investments involving pre-breeding processes, crop phenotyping, and field trials.

NIAB previously led the establishment of the European Winter Wheat Research Center in 2020, using molecular marker-assisted breeding technology to introduce new traits from non-adapted germplasm materials into elite European wheat varieties, producing hundreds of advanced pre-breeding materials that were handed over to breeding companies for evaluation. This round of the project will carry out further trait combination and validation based on existing materials and technologies, and the related materials will enter the multi-environment testing phase of commercial breeding companies.

This project is incorporated into the international collaborative research system of the second phase of the International Wheat Yield Partnership. NIAB undertakes the work of the European regional research center and collaborates with other international research nodes on technology and materials.
